Socio-ecological movements in Germany and Europe (2024-08-25)
DownloadAt the 50th anniversary conference of the Institute for Social Ecology (ISE) in Calais, Vermont (USA) on August 25, 2024, Prof. Dr. Michael Opielka gave a presentation on “Social Ecological Movements in Germany and Europe”. With this contribution, he documented the connection between ISÖ – Institute for Social Ecology and ISE. In the spring of 1988, six months after ISÖ was founded, Michael Opielka visited ISE in Vermont and held talks with its founder Murray Boockchin and ISE’s managing director Dan Chodorkoff. Bookchin was one of the pioneers of a combination of socialist and ecological perspectives, similar to André Gorz, a founding member of the ISÖ at the time. Bookchin’s eco-anarchist orientation did not correspond to the research programme of the ISÖ, but there were and are relevant areas of intersection, especially in the field of communalism and decentralized political self-administration.
